🧶 Workshop Overview

Over 8 weeks, participants will knit the Defying Gravity socks by Lisa K. Ross — an elegant top-down design featuring twisted stitches that create flowing cable motifs reminiscent of movement and lift. This workshop will focus on mastering intricate stitch patterns, chart reading, and custom sock fitting techniques while progressing step by step through the pattern. Please note that you must know how to knit socks!

  • Reading and following charted patterns

  • Working twisted stitches and cables

  • Contrasting heel and toe construction

  • Gusset and heel flap techniques

  • Toe shaping and Kitchener stitch

  • Customizing for fit and foot length

  • To get the most out of this workshop, participants should be familiar with the basic steps of sock knitting — including casting on, knitting in the round, and turning a heel.

 

🧰 Materials

All yarn must be purchased from Yarning for Ewe.

  • Defying Gravity pattern by Lisa K. Ross (available on Ravelry)

  • Fingering-weight sock yarn: approximately 400 yards main color (plus optional contrast color for heel/toe)

  • Needles: US 1 (2.25 mm) or size needed to achieve gauge — double-pointed or circular (for Magic Loop)

  • Stitch markers, tapestry needle, cable needle (optional)

Week 1 (Oct 19): Pattern overview, gauge swatching, cast-on, and cuff
Week 2: Twisted-stitch leg pattern setup
Week 3: Continue leg pattern and chart reading practice
Week 4: Heel flap and turn
Week 5: Picking up stitches and gusset shaping
Week 6: Foot pattern and cable continuation
Week 7: Toe shaping and Kitchener stitch
Week 8 (Dec 7): Finishing techniques, blocking, and show-and-tell!
